This year, the tenth day of Muharram, known as ‘Ashura’, falls on Sunday, July 6. This day holds special significance for the Muslim community as it commemorates the sacrifice of Imam Hussain. Especially among Shia Muslims, this day is marked by Tazia processions and public mourning rituals. Meanwhile, the Sunni community observes the day by fasting and offering prayers. The first month of the Islamic calendar is associated with peace and martyrdom. On this occasion, many states organize religious processions and events. In view of these gatherings, the Uttar Pradesh administration is on full alert.

Sunday Holiday, But High Alert

Since July 6 is a Sunday, most institutions will already remain closed. Still, both central and state governments have declared it a gazetted holiday. Banks, post offices, schools, and government offices will all stay shut. While this will ease public movement, processions and crowded events will continue to pose law and order challenges. Therefore, administrative preparedness is being deemed essential. Especially in sensitive districts, additional security forces have been deployed. Police are monitoring every possible risk point.

Stock Markets and Business to Shut Down Too

Due to Muharram, the financial sector will also come to a standstill. Major stock exchanges like BSE and NSE will remain closed on this day, including all segments like equities, derivatives, and currency trading. In addition, several private corporate offices and multinational companies have also declared a holiday. Business activity across the country will pause for a day. Investors and traders have already been informed in advance about this closure.

900 People Under Preventive Detention in Sambhal

In Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, more than 900 people have been placed under preventive detention. District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia clarified that the administration does not want to take any risks. Individuals suspected of potentially disturbing peace were identified in advance, and their activities are being constantly monitored. This detention is being carried out under provisions like the Public Safety Act. The district administration has stated that this move is to ensure public safety.

Tight Security Across the State

DGP Rajeev Krishna has issued clear instructions to all police units across the state. No permissions will be granted for new processions, and display of weapons is strictly prohibited. Drone surveillance is being conducted in sensitive areas. Other measures include CCTV monitoring, peace committee meetings, and social media tracking. The state government is employing a strategy that combines strictness with community dialogue. The goal is to ensure no untoward incident occurs and that the festival passes peacefully.

Ban on Controversial Posters and Speeches

The state administration has made it clear that objectionable banners, posters, or social media content will face strict action. Speeches or posts that incite religious sentiments are also being monitored. All districts have been directed to keep their cyber teams active. Efforts to spread rumors via social media will be immediately blocked. Field officers have been instructed to stay on the ground and personally assess the situation. This step is aimed at neutralizing tension from the root.

No Politics, Only Peace the Priority

This time, the administration is avoiding any political statements regarding Muharram. The message from the government is clear—maintain peace. Through continuous dialogue with religious organizations, police have appealed for shared responsibility. Senior police officers have been deployed in the districts. All religious events will be video recorded. The public has been urged to cooperate so that the true essence of the festival—patience and devotion—remains intact. This time, the government is operating with a ‘zero tolerance’ policy.
